Paolo Magaudda

Hello, I’m an Associate Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communication at the Padova University, Dept. FISPPA, where I work with the research unit PaSTIS, which I co-founded in 2008. At the University of Padova, I’m a member of the board of directors and coordinator of the teaching activities of the PhD programme in Social Sciences at the University of Padova. In 2020, I obtained the ‘habilitation’ as a full professor in Cultural Sociology within the Italian academic system.

Since 2019 I’m co-editor-in-chief of “Studi Culturali”, the leading Italian scientific journal on the social study of culture. I’m also a member of the board of directors of “Sociologica” and “Dancecult“. Since 2021 I have been working for the European Commission as an expert and reviewer for Horizon projects. Between 2013 and 2018 I was Secretary of STS Italia, the Italian Society for the Social Study of Science & Technology, which brings together more than a hundred Italian STS scholars. In 2010 I founded the journal “Tecnoscienza”, which I co-edited for eleven years until 2021.

My research interests encompass a diverse array of phenomena pertaining to the nexus of technology, culture and society. I have a particular interest in the role of digital media in society, the intersection between consumer culture and technological modernity, the role of popular culture in understanding science and technology in society, the relationship between music and technology and, most recently, the processes of innovation in the cycling sector.  My main academic fields are science and technology studies, media studies, cultural sociology, consumer studies, cultural studies and sound studies.

I have published more than eighty book chapters and refereed articles in many journals, including “Journal of Consumer Culture”, “Science as Culture”, “Cultural Sociology”, “Convergence”, “Annals of the International Communication Association”, “Computer Supported Cooperative Work”, “Revue d’Anthropologie des Connaissances”, “Journal of Science Communication”, “Journal of Peer Production”, “Appetite”, “Modern Italy”, “Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia”, “Polis”, “Sociologica”, “Studi Culturali” and “Tecnoscienza: Italian Journal of Science and Technology Studies”.
